About Head Case
Head Case is a family-owned, dad-driven, grassroots organization that is in agreement with concerned parents everywhere who simply want sports be to be safer for their children. Head Case has one goal--to help protect young athletes from the risks of undetected cumulative concussions.
To accomplish this safety goal we have created the Head Health Management System, an affordable three-part system that measures head impacts, records data and provides diagnostic tools to detect potential concussions.
In response to robust national demand, Head Case will bring its first suite of products to market in the fall of 2015. The debut of the Head Health Management System will assure parents and coaches that they can have an accurate record of the head health of their athletes.
The Head Case system consists of three components:
(1) Head Case Impact Sensor:
The Head Case Impact Sensor is a small impact detection device the size of a flash drive that is mounted inside headgear. The sensor incorporates an accelerometer and a memory board, which records the impact of any hit over a prescribed G-force threshold indicating potential risk to the athlete’s head. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers the sensor. Connecting a mini-USB cable to mobile devices operating the Head Case Mobile App or to a computer provides recharging capability and allows transfer of the data recorded on the chip.
(2) Head Case Mobile App
The Head Case Mobile App works with the Head Case Impact Sensor as a field-side tool when a large collision results in an injury. The Head Case Mobile App will walk a parent, trainer or coach through a series of questions about impact-related head trauma. The first set of questions is incident-related, reviewing what happened in the collision; while the second set of questions involves patient response. Once an athlete has completed the field-side concussion symptom detection test, the data from the test is relayed to that athlete’s personal profile on the Head Case Website, where it is paired with impact data collected from the sensor.
(3) Head Case Website
The Head Case Website is the final component in the Head Health Management System where registered athletes have their critical data stored securely and correlated against broad data provided by both the medical community and other athletes. The website is designed to serve as both a resource center for traumatic brain injury information and news, and a personalized record of an athlete’s head traumas across his career.
Once a product is purchased, a unique ID is assigned to every Head Case Impact Sensor. The athlete securely registers their sensor and personal information into the Head Case Website where all recorded information is added to a database and available anywhere via the Cloud. Head Case will track and record all impacts over a preset G-force threshold that an athlete takes over the course of a practice, game, season or year for the lifetime of the athlete. If a traumatic impact occurs and the Head Case Mobile App test is deployed, once the data from the sensor is uploaded, it is automatically paired with the test data and is placed confidentially in thatathlete’s file for reporting and analysis.
Head Case will provide national stats data, when available, which may be used in the analysis as well. Athletes will be able to choose what data, if any, they wish to share for analysis or assistance.
The Head Health Management System provides a comprehensive service capable of measuring, recording, monitoring and analyzing first signs of potential traumatic brain injury. The moment an impact registers above a certain threshold, or the moment the Head Case Mobile App tests indicate impairment or risk of further injury, the Head Health Management System can alert parents and will automatically provide the athlete with direct leads to Emergency Response Services and customized recovery plans.
Head Case maintains active contact with parents during analysis of the athlete’s condition, and correlates all traumatic incidences to the athlete’s profile. Resources on the Head Case Website guide the athlete to getting back on the field safely and in a proper time frame. All profiles and records will be documented and searchable on the Head Case Website for the lifetime of the athlete.
The comprehensive nature of the Head Health Management System is a form of preventative medicine capable of mitigating the increasing liabilities associated with competitive sports while simultaneously delivering “peace of mind” to coaches, trainers, parents and athletes alike.
